The South Australian Virtual Power Plant (SA VPP) is an innovative energy initiative that connects thousands of solar panels and Tesla Powerwall batteries installed in homes and businesses across South Australia into a single, coordinated network.
This decentralised system operates like a traditional power plant, using smart technology to generate, store, and distribute electricity. It supports the grid by supplying energy during peak demand or outages, helps participants reduce their electricity bills, and contributes to the State’s clean energy goals by minimising reliance on fossil fuels.
Originally launched as a government-backed pilot, the SA VPP has evolved into one of the world’s largest virtual power plants, now managed by Tesla using advanced software to optimise energy flows and grid stability.
Infravue was engaged to conduct Vendor Technical Due Diligence, focusing on the operational performance and continued roll-out of the ~7,000 sites that form the initial stages of the SA VPP.
Demonstrating the performance of operational sites formed a focus of our review, which sought to test the performance of separate asset classes, as well as the aggregated performance of all systems against warranted levels.
